Dear  Domingo,

Right now, one of Shell’s Arctic oil rigs with 139,000 gallons of diesel and 12,000 gallons of hydraulic oil on board, is being retrieved and assessed for damage after it ran aground within sight of Alaska’s fragile coastline. The Kulluk got into serious trouble after hitting a typical winter storm off the island of Sitkalidak, near Kodiak. The old rig was stranded just miles from an endangered sea otter and sea lions habitat, threatening the area with a potential oil spill. After this latest fiasco Shell's reputation is now in tatters.

This isn’t the first time Shell has put their crew and the Arctic at risk this year.The grounding of the Kulluk is the latest in a series of embarrassing accidents that have plagued Shell’s attempts to find oil in the extreme Arctic. The company intends to try again next year and the decision about whether or not it gets that opportunity will be made soon. This is our chance to stop Shell from drilling in the Arctic next year and beyond. Tell United States President Barack Obama to call ‘timeout’ on Arctic drilling and suspend Shell’s permits.

A Greenpeace team is in the area monitoring the situation. The 30-year-old Kullukwas being towed back from the Arctic when it hit heavy weather that caused the towing line to break. After a 48 hour rescue attempt the situation became too dangerous and the team was forced to let the rig drift free.The US Coast Guard evacuated crew members by helicopter, and the rig ran aground just miles from the Kodiak Island National Wildlife Refuge. After six days of struggling harsh weather conditions, the rig is now being finally towed away.

This is more proof of the recklessness and unchecked greed of corporations like Shell. We cannot let them put the most precious areas of our planet at risk in search of oil and profits. Tell President Obama that we cannot trust Shell's assurances on safety. He must protect the Arctic and its wildlife and suspend Arctic drilling permits immediately.

This is the latest mishap Shell has suffered after an extremely rocky drilling season. Their woes included another grounding - this time of their drillship theNoble Discoverer - a flash fire on board this ship, an oil spill containment dome that failed spectacularly and “was crushed like a beer can” during testing, and warnings from the US Coast Guard for inadequate pollution prevention and safety equipment.

With Big Oil in the Arctic, disaster is not a question of if, but when. Shell’s top officials have admitted that “there will be spills”. It’s time for us to put a stop to this insanity before it’s too late, and right now with the media coverage of this accident we have a good chance of making our voices heard. Ask President Obama to suspend Shell’s permits and protect the Arctic for all of us, and please forward this email to friends and family.

ESPERAMOS QUE LAS FUERZAS PATRIÓTICAS, REVOLUCIONARIAS DE IZQUIERDAS, MEDIOS ALTERNATIVOS Y NO ALTERNATIVOS, AMBIENTALISTAS, ECÓLOGOS, ORGANIZACIONES JUVENILES Y ESTUDIANTILES ENTRE OTROS SE DEN CITA CON UNA CUOTA FIJA DE PARTICIPANTES EL 23 DE LOS CORRIENTES A LAS 10 AM EN EL MINISTERIO DE MEDIO AMBIENTE Y DESDE AHI AL MIRADOR SUR DONDE NOS INSTALAREMOS EN CAMPAMENTO PERMANENTE POR TRES DIAS HASTA EL 25.

TALLER DEL COMITÉ NACIONAL CONTRA LA MEGAMINERIA DEL DOMINGO 16 DE DICIEMBRE DEL AÑO 2012

CALENDARIO ENERO-MARZO DE ACCIONES CONTRA LA MEGAMINERIA, POR LOMA MIRANDA CONTRA LA IMPUNIDAD Y POR LA VIDA.

1.- 23 de enero en la mañana: piquete al ministro de Medio Ambiente.

2.- 23 de enero luego del piquete: instalación del campamento frente a las oficinas del PNUD por tres días hasta el 25 de ese mes.

3.- 26 de enero a las 9 AM: Excursión estudiantil y popular a Loma Miranda y al balneario del rio Jagüey.

4.-  19 y 20 de febrero: 48 horas de paralizaciones, movilizaciones y protestas simultaneas de las comunidades del país que así decidan acogerlo soberana y democráticamente.

5.- 17 de marzo: realización de la multi marcha hacia Loma Miranda, homenaje a Orlando Martínez que tanto denunció el carácter mafioso de las multinacionales.

6.- Juventud Caribe y otras juventudes: diseñan logística para el campamento en Loma Miranda que se instalará al término de la multimarcha.

7.- Virtudes Álvarez, Juan José Vargas, Escalin Gutiérrez y Yanet Ferreira fueron designados/as como la comisión nacional permanente de finanzas

8.- Elvis Cartagena, Tony Sánchez y Chino Gutiérrezpreparan y ejecutan la tirada de una separata o boletín  alrededor de la lucha contra la megaminería con fines educativos y de estimulación a la resistencia por un ambiente sano.

9.- Luis Carvajal, Chino Gutiérrez, Domingo Abreu, Elvis Cartagena, Yanet Ferreira y Tony Sánchez: fueron designados como la comisión permanente de Educación y Propaganda, quienes dentro de sus funciones inmediatas deben: a) diseñar las propuestas de cómo intervenir en el Carnaval; b) levantar una argumentación bien documentada y graficada  para ser distribuida del por qué Loma Miranda es Innegociable; c) convocar a distintas embajadas para que participen con ponencias de una especie de ferias-taller con el tema ¿Cómo perdemos biodiversidad?; d) colocación de spot; e) promover actividades  del plan de acción; f) exposición rodante audiovisual, etc.

10.- Pablo Abad Núñez, Ricardo Arias, Elvis Cartagena, Isidro Silba y Hugo Rodríguez  fueron designados como comisión de comunicación y enlace.

11.- Definir en el campamento en Loma Miranda la pertinencia y detalles de una conferencia nacional ambiental.

12.-  Las reuniones del comité serán cada quince días rotado entre Bonao y Controba y con enlaces que se designaran para que participen en las reuniones de los comités locales

13.- Martes 8 de de enero 2013 a las 3 pm será la próxima reunión del comité en la UASD-Bonao para diseñar el sistema operativo de las acciones más inmediatas de este plan.

14.- Una comisión completará el Balance que se hizo de los trabajos ejecutados en el 2012 y de las debilidades y fortalezas del comité el cual se hará circular en las próximas horas.   

El taller concluyó de manera unánime que es positivo el balance del trabajo realizado durante el año 2012, descansando dicha conclusión en los aspectos siguientes:

·        Con la marcha del 4 de marzo y del 16 de septiembre logramos colocar en la opinión pública nacional el interés por la preservación de Loma Miranda libre de explotación minera,  al tiempo de que dejamos bien claro antes la autoridades que la resistencia contra le pretensiones de Falconbridge es a cualquier precio.

·        Múltiple fueron las actividades de masas en la puerta que da acceso a Loma Miranda; se realizaron marchas en La Vega y SFM así como también dos marchas simultáneas a Loma Mala y una marcha contra la Barrick Gold con lo cual totalizaron ocho marchas; numerosas ruedas de prensas y entrevistas y tres debate cara a cara con FALCONDO donde quedó sentada la sinrazón que anima a esta empresa; se fortaleció la lucha que vive el pueblo de Moca y la comunidad de Juan López contra la mina Langostura; diversas fueron las actividades educativas desarrollada mediante la lucha misma y decenas de charlas desarrolladas por la Asamblea Nacional Ambiental y el Área de Extensión del Curce-UASD, en centros educativos, barrios, campos y universidades.

·        Quedan por superar la desconexión existente entre algunas estructura locales y la coordinación nacional del comité así como también la inexistencia de varias localidades en la aún no hay comité.
